Thanks for the hugely important work that you do to keep these memories alive …As a direct descendant of James Kirk, who was borough surveyor and a landlord and hotelier… I am really fascinated to see the contribution he made to the community and wondered do we know if he is buried in the church graveyard…? I would love to go and pay my respects…..

Do you know roughly when he died? Did he have a middle name? Was he a landlord of a pub or hotel in Whittington?

He was landlord of the Wellington Hotel in the 1880s, owned the Dusty Miller Beer House, and also held the Bath Hotel.
Don’t know his date or place of death, I’m afraid….

Was James’s wife Mary?

I think it was they were listed as landlords at the Wellington in 1881. I can’t find them at the Bath or Dusty Miller but that’s mainly down to census records so 10 year gaps. In 1871 they were living on West Street & James listed as grocer. By 1901 he is listed as Surveyor & Sanitary Inspector. He died on 26/11/1909 aged 70. He is buried in the Churchyard but I can’t see a grave reference. I have found a Mary Kirk died 10/7/1921 aged 83 & I do have a plot number.

They are buried in St Bartholomew’s Churchyard in Old Whittington. The Church is open Tuesdays,Wednesdays & Thursdays 11am – 4pm as well as Sundays upto about 1pm. I am around on Thursdays. I will check Mary’s plot and check for a memorial & see what I can find re James.
